Mr Anning was invited to speak at the rally of around 300 people on St Kilda Beach, organised by Blair Cottrell and Neil Erikson. The anti crime group claimed to be meeting to "discuss" Melbourne's youth crime problem. Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has since called Mr Anning fit to stand in parliament, while Labor MP Tim Watts described his behavior as radical. Victorian Senator Derryn Hinch has slammed Mr Anning's move as "interesting". Far Left-wing activists attended the beach to confront a group looking to 'discuss' Melbourne's youth crime problem. The event's organisers, Cottrell and Erikson, were convicted in 2017 and fined in the Magistrates Court for inciting contempt and ridicule of Muslims.
