About five minutes after Ventura County sheriff deputies were dispatched to Borderline Bar & Grill for an active shooter, one officer alerted dispatch he was making entry with CHP assistance."One subject advised she didn't see (the shooter) come out," the officer told dispatch, according to hours of Ventura County Sheriff's Office radio traffic reviewed by the Bay Area News Group. "We're making entry." Over the next minute, there are reports from an officer inside the bar saying "multiple people are down" and "at least five down inside," according to the radio traffic archived by Broadcastify. It's not clear from the radio traffic if the officer announcing entry is Sgt. Ron Helus, who the Ventura sheriff announced had been killed by gunfire after confronting the shooter, or the CHP officer who was with him. A dozen people were killed late Wednesday night by the gunman, identified by Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran who was armed with a single Glock 21 handgun with an illegal extended magazine. The country dance bar was holding its weekly "college night" when the gunman entered around 11:20 p.m. A dispatcher first sent deputies to the bar in response to someone hearing gunshots inside the establishment and "one person advising there's a person inside shooting." More and more callers alerted dispatch to the shooting, and one dispatcher warned officers the "subject is at the front shooting at everybody." As officers responded to the scene, they talked about bringing rifles. At 11:27 p.m., a few minutes after the officer alerted dispatch he was going inside, an officer reported "multiple shots being fired in the back northwest area." {{file|t=a2Aai_1541712159}}
